History of the Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier estate
Frédéric Mugnier, a Dijon liquor maker, established this estate in 1863. The property extends over twenty hectares spread over Chambolles-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The descendants of Frédéric Mugnier ran the estate and the liqueur factory until 1949. At that time, the economic difficulties of the post-war period forced the great-grandson, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, to sell the liqueur factory and to rent out the farm. The company was then reduced to a large wine house in Nuits-Saint-Georges. In 1978, he took over the management of the farm until his death in 1985. Today, his son Frédéric Mugnier succeeds him in the management, surrounded by the estate's team. Under his aegis, the part of the estate that had been rented out for 53 years returned to the family fold. A phase of rebirth that has taken the Mugnier estate from 4 to 14 hectares. The Clos de la Maréchale, a parcel of approximately 9 hectares, was then reintegrated into Nuits-Saint-Georges. One hectare of this parcel is dedicated to the production of white wines, the volumes of which are kept secret. The estate also acquired vast new vats. Note that the company Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier uses the label "Château-Chambolle Musigny" to market its wines.
Terroir and grape varieties
The property produces around 60,000 bottles per year from its 14 hectares of vineyards. The vines have an average age of 60 years. The winegrower and owner of this wine estate, the scientist Fréderic Mugnier, markets lively, well-balanced wines in the bottle that will develop a patina, but also young wines. The grape varieties are 100% Pinot Noir for the red wines and 100% Chardonnay for the white wines, with an average age of the vines of 60 years. The grapes are harvested by hand. The best terroirs of the estate include Musigny, Bonnes-mares, les Amoureuses, and les Fuées. The owner has stopped selling Musigny until further notice in order to allow time for the bottles to age in the cellars. But some of these rarities destined for long ageing are available for sale to wine lovers. Returning to the terroir of the estate, the Musigny wines benefit from a good orientation between two deep valleys, facing the Alps and above the Clos Vougeot. The vines are protected from the mountain winds. The soils are draining with a good composition of gravel and little clay. The freshness, the dryness, and the good sunshine favour the terroir of Musigny and give its wines their strong personality.
The qualities of the wines of Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier
The wines produced before the year 2000 stand out for their exuberant character and their many flavours at a subjugating level of intensity. No competitor can match these ruby-coloured Grands Crus with their incredibly complex nose and velvety, powerful mouthfeel. Later vintages are more delicate with fresh, vibrant aromas and a hint of acidity. A seductive character that makes it worthy of long ageing.
-Domain J-F Mugnier Bonnes mares 1988: this grand cru red with a perfect capsule and label condition is a true elixir that will enchant your taste buds. Its sweet, deliciously fragrant nose of pinot noir will surprise you with notes of undergrowth, earth and complex flavours. A very succulent wine with a beautiful depth and a trace of tannin on the finish. A rare Grand Cru that can grace your dinner table on a special occasion to impress your guests.
-Domain J-F Mugnier Bonnes mares 2016: this Grand Cru is one of the most renowned wines of the estate. It is a full-bodied, concentrated, full and layered wine. It will seduce you with its deep and tasty fruit core and a long and precise finish. It is also a wine with good ageing potential.
-Domain Mugnier Chambolle Musigny les Amoureuses 1990: a red premier cru made from old vines planted in the 1950s. A wine offering the crème de crème of great Burgundy wines with its most accomplished expressions: complex, vinous, rich aromas and immense ageing potential. A very easy drinking wine. The condition of the capsule and label are intact.
-Domain Mugnier Chambolle Musigny les Amoureuses 2015: another premier cru in perfect condition. The producer defines it as a vintage that conforms to the definition of a great year but whose expressions will only reveal themselves in fullness after long ageing. The wine has an attractive colour with pronounced cedar and pine flavours. If you wish to enjoy it without waiting a few decades, accompany it with fish, red meat or poultry.
-Domain Mugnier Saint-Georges clos de la Maréchale 2004 : a first growth with a light purple colour and an impeccable exterior. A very pleasant bottle to offer as a gift. This mature wine offers you a pleasant tasting with its aromas of herbaceous red fruits, earthy or vegetal notes, a medium body and a good length on the finish. To get the most out of its flavours, breathe it in without pouring the wine. Like all older vintages, the bottle should be served between 16°C and 18°C.
-Domain Mugnier Saint-Geroges clos de la Maréchale 2018: an exceptional red premier cru from a pinot noir plantation over 50 years old. An attractive bouquet wonderfully perfumed with notes of black tea, rose petals or juniper. The body is quite full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. If you are looking for a quality wine that will stand the test of time, this bottle is to be recommended.
