Mersault appellation
The area of the Mersault vineyard is around 400 ha, 95% of which is devoted to the cultivation of Chardonnay. The production of red wine is limited to only a few plots. According to history, the monks of Cîteaux were the first winegrowers during the 11th century in this town dotted with prestigious castles. The name Mersault also takes the name of the historic estate, impressive Château Mersault. The eponymous castle is renowned worldwide for La Paulée, its legendary lunches celebrating the end of the harvest every year. It is also the largest owner of this appellation. The château produces Grands Crus, Premiers Crus and other appellations as well as a monopoly: Clos de Grands Charons.
The best terroirs of the appellation are composed of marl and marl limestone of the Jurassic. The dream terroir of goldmonish, the main grape variety in this appellation, because it allows them to express all the finesse and potential of their aromas. These terroirs are located at an altitude of 260 m between the east and the south. The white wines in this appellation have an interesting ageing potential between 8 to 15 years against 5 to 10 years for the red wines.
Our selection of Mersault producers
Vin Grands Crus is an online sales specialist of Grands Crus, old vintages and quality wines available in bottles of wine or magnums. Choose from our exceptional wines offered at low prices, and take advantage of our promotions to fill your wine cabinet.
-Domaine Coche Dury: this estate produces exceptionally intense, full-bodied wines with concentrated but never stuffy fruits. The palpable acidity is well balanced. It is one of the most sought-after estates internationally because of its style of Mersault wines. At their best, its wines have a pleasant nutty flavor, a creamy, silky and full-bodied texture with notes of exotic fruits, lemon peel, mineral elements and a slight hint of truffle aroma. Its Grands Crus plots are all located in Mersault while its vineyard sites are spread over the communes Mersault, Puligny-Montrachet, Monthélie , Auxey-Duresses, Volnay and Corton Charlemagne. This producer also produces AOC of village wines.
-Domaine d'Auvernay: the small vineyard of 4 ha of this estate belongs to the Leroy empire. It includes two Grands Crus in Côte de Nuits and plots in the Chardonnay terroirs in the Côte de Beaune. The estate adopts the principles of biodynamics, and a low yield to produce prestigious wines of a precise, elegant, and rich style. Because of the tiny amount produced by the House, the wines are stormed as soon as they are released. It then becomes rare to find old vintages or recent vintages, because the estate prefers not to offer them for sale unless they are ready to be tasted. On our site, you are spoilt for choice on vintages dating from 1998 to 2015. The rarity of these ancient wines makes them a good plan for collectors and amateurs or for those who wish to build a cellar.
-Jean Marc Roulot: this producer is a pioneer in making his village wines from Mersault wines from unique appellations such as Tillets, Luchets, Tesson, Meix-Chavaux . This field held in high esteem by critics was founded in 1830. It produces organically grown Premiers Crus and village wines. Take a tour of our site to choose from the quality wines of this producer, offered at an advantageous quality-price ratio. Its wines offer a beautiful expression of their terroir with their silky, dense style, their beautiful acidity and a good persistence of flavors.
-Arnaud Ente: this producer offers a tiny production on his 4 ha of vineyard, spread over 10 plots. He elaborates some Premiers crus of rare beauty. They are rich wines, generous while being precise coupled with a juicy citrus taste and good minerality. Critics say that the estate produces wines that compete with the best and improve with each release of vintage.
-Bernard Bonin: this 7 ha estate produces white wines with its farms in Mersault or Puligny-Montrachet. It also follows biodynamic methods. Its wines have a delicate nose, intense flavors of green apples, lemon peel, white peaches, cheese crusts and match notes. The texture is vibrant with a vivid acidity and a finish marked by a hint of mineral elements .
-Maison Leroy: this merchant/winemaker in the Côte des Nuits region produces a range of wines from emblematic terroirs such as Clos de Vougeot, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Le Chambertin Musigny.... Its properties of 23 ha of vines include Grands Crus and parcels of Premiers Crus as well as vineyards of village and communal appellations. Its wines have a fantastic nose of fragrant red fruits, spices and tar notes. The palate is silky, concentrated with a nice structured and a long length.
-Pierre Morey: this family estate of 10 ha founded more than 2 centuries ago is also one of the emblematic estates of the vineyard of Bourgogne. Its production has been biodynamic since 1998. Its wines highlight pure, airy aromas of citrus flowers and mineral notes with a beautiful mouthfeel of vibrant, tight or muscular flavors on the lemony and long finish.
-Comtes Lafon: this Burgundy wine estate produces white wines and red wines that are very popular with wine lovers. It has also applied the principle of biodynamics since 1998. The Montrachet is considered the jewel in Lafon's crown. But the Mersault Perrières and Mersault Goutte d'or on sale on this site are also a great introduction to this producer's renowned range. They are offered at an interesting price-quality ratio. The wines of this estate have an expressive bouquet with aromas of citrus, nuts, minerals or dried petals. On tasting, they have an impressive palate with a long spicy or fruity finish.
