Consciological location and terroir of the Cornas appellation
This appellation area is located on steep hillsides with an ideal east and south-east exposure. The winds of the temperate climate regularly sweep the terraces from 125 to 400 m above sea level. The high sunshine and the climate favor the production of wines of character. The AOC is produced on 110 ha of vines around the commune of Cornas. It is located in the department of Ardèche, about 7 km from Valence. The appellation only produces red wines just like the Côte Rôtie. Syrah is the only grape variety used. The terroir of this appellation is characterized by filtering granite soils and sandy-clay soils, limestone with a high content of iron oxide. The wines Cornas have a somewhat old-fashioned style, with an earthy, vegetal and animal nose and rough, austere, rustic tannins with a good length. With age, they become more flexible with rounder, more balanced tannins. The type of wine that goes perfectly with leg of lamb, grilled beef, barbecue lamb skewers...
Our selection of the best wines of the Cornas appellation
-Auguste Clape: this winemaker excels in the elaboration of beautiful wines of character. It owns 11 acres of prime plots located on the steep hill surrounding the village. Some of its vines are more than 100 years old. Vinification is done in a traditional way in used wooden barrels. This makes it possible to produce wines of a splendid opaque and impenetrable color. However, with a few years of aging, the tannins become softer and the bottle exudes seductive aromas of creamy and peppery black fruit. At the tasting, the wine develops more complex flavors. This type of wine stands out for its enormous aging potential but they can also be tried when they are young and fresh. -Thierry Allemand: although the plots of this winemaker are on a granite subsoil with little clay, the terroir enjoys optimal sunshine. After years of patience to acquire land, this winemaker can create his own estate that extends over 5 ha. The aging of its wines is partly made of stainless steel and partly of used oak. They are then racked and bottled without being filtered. Its wines also have the masculine, powerful and distinctive character of Cornas. The old vintages of 1997 and 1996 of this producer are available on this site.
