Presentation of Château cos d'Estournel, producer of Saint-Estèphe

The emblematic Château cos d'Estournel is located in Saint-Estèphe on the highest hills of the Médoc in Gironde. The laying of the cornerstone of the property dates back to 1762. Construction was completed in 1853. The estate, which covers an area of 91 hectares, inherited the vineyards near the village of Cos in 1811. This allowed it to export its products to distant countries such as India. The Chinese pagodas of its cellars illustrate the success of this feat in the history of the estate. But in 1852, the owner, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, crushed under the weight of debts, had to pass the property to Fernand Ginestet, himself co-owner of Château Margaux. The heirs continued the management until 1998. Then, the estate was again bought by the Merlaut family. After a few years, the Merlaut family relinquished the property. Michel Reybier, the entrepreneur from Lyon, one of the richest Frenchmen (the one who survived a tragic plane crash in 1994) took over the Château in his turn. The industrialist restored the buildings to their original appearance. And since 2017, he is at the head of the management of cos d'Estournel.

Terroir of Cos d'Estournel

The château has a 91 ha vineyard with a grape variety distribution of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. The average life span of the vines planted on a large part of the parcels is 35 years. By the way, the word cos means hill of pebbles in Gascon. The terroir is thus characterized by an accumulation of gravel and calcareous clay. This balanced composition allows the vines to resist times of severe drought by drawing water from the clay table. It also gives Saint-Estèphe wines their unique and qualitative composition, guaranteeing a good wine for ageing. The company, which spares no effort to produce racy and powerful wines, worthy of its classification, decided to acquire a new vat room in stave oak in 2008. Concerning the climatic conditions of the region, the domain enjoys a mild and rainy climate at the beginning of the season; an optimal sunshine with abundant rains in summer and dry and hot winds during the harvest. All these conditions are favorable to the ripening of the grapes and also contribute to its multiple nuances.

Characteristics about AOC Saint-Estèphe wines

The appellation Saint-Estèphe refers to a red wine categorized in the class of "still wines". It has the French label AOC (Appellation d'origine contrôlée) and the European label AOP (Appellation d'origine protégée). These are wines that stand out for their strong character. The wines made by Château Cos d'Estournel are among the Grands Crus, the best wines in France. The vintages of Cos d'Estournel wines sold on this site are between 1953 and 2013. They are opulent and voluptuous wines that fascinate by their complex aromas and a harmonious, powerful mouth with great finesse.
-We recommend Château Cos d'Estournel 1975 to connoisseurs and serious wine drinkers. An intriguing, secretive red wine that slowly reveals itself on the palate. A treasure with a smooth texture that tells you stories of distant lands while awakening infinite sensations. A true ode to the cos d'Estournel heritage. A wine that goes perfectly with chefs' dishes such as roast leg of lamb, duck breast stuffed with foie gras, but also with classic dishes such as barbecued chicken etc.
-The red wine Château cos d'Estournel 2011 magnum, on the other hand, reveals a harmonious combination of exceptional richness and surprising freshness with an elegant base that gives way to a discreet and mineral final note. A good accompaniment for meat gratins, stewed dishes, cheese spreads, pizzas.
-Wines on special offer such as Château cos d'Estournel 1998 are also a good investment with their excellent price-quality ratio. This observation applies to all the wines produced by this domain. This 1998 vintage is always distinguished by its great vivacity counterbalanced by its unexpected sweetness. A typical character of Saint-Estèphe wines. A wine with enough tannins to offer you a unique tasting experience. Enjoy with beef or game.
-As for the younger vintage wines from 2010 to 2013, they are beautiful juices, mastered in their freshness with a long finish that will leave you hungry. We advise you to go slowly. These wines can reach their maximum potential over the years.
