Classification and terroir of the Côtes du Rhône appellation

This region could compete with Bordeaux the place of second major French wine region because it extends over about 40,000 ha. The appellation includes 171 municipalities and more than 5,000 producers, cooperatives and traders. The wines are classified into 3 levels:
- premier niveau AOC Côtes du Rhône

- second level AOC Côtes du Rhône village which is subdivided into two according to the appellation area of the communes

- and higher level wines called "crus" such as AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Taste and price vary depending on the ranking. The appellation allows winemakers to choose from 21 grape varieties, the majority of which are red grape varieties. Wines can be vinified into rouge, rosé, blanc. The colour of the wine must respect the number of grape varieties and their blend. The crus are planted in the best mountain granite terroirs of the north and the rocky valleys of the south. Note that the word raw does not often appear on the labels of vins du Rhône. The classification Côtes du Rhône Villages, meanwhile, represents vineyards with a limited yield according to the various specifications and a higher alcohol content. These are wines at affordable prices and cut for ageing. They go perfectly with dishes like a leg of lamb or a duck fillet.

-Emmanuel Reynaud: the Château Rayas estate belongs to Emmanuel Reynaud. The 12 ha of vineyards of this estate benefit from an exposure to the north-east, a sandy and limestone terroir or clayey in some places. Despite this rather unfavorable climate, the famous Emmanuel Reynaud has managed to produce luxurious, sensual, fresh wines that offer an unforgettable tasting experience with silky tannins and a long kirschée and spicy finish. Some of its wines can be drunk as soon as they are released but some have to wait a few years to obtain a balanced, elegant, intense and complex wine. Take advantage of the promotions on this site to buy these exceptional wines at the best price !
-Domaine Jamet: Jean-Paul Jamet and his wife manage this estate of 8 ha of vineyard divided into Côte-Rôtie, Côtes-du-Rhône, and local wine. Its wines are available in various styles. They can express high purity and concentration with intense levels of ripe, soft and dark fruit, and animal aromas. On the palate, the fleshy, powerful wines reveal multiple layers of fruit and dusty tannins. It is advisable to wait 10 to 15 years to let the wine evolve and improve. Other bottles can also reveal a complex nose with the scents of cherries, violets, spices, fat, cloves with a soft texture and a refreshing finish.
