Appellation Bordeaux Pomerol

Pomerol is both a wine region in the Gironde department and a type of red wine. It is also the smallest appellation among the regions of fine Bordeaux wines. It is relatively recent and does not have a classification system like the other AOCs in Bordeaux. However, the best vintages of this appellation are taken by storm by amateurs. In this guide, we will review the terroir of the region and the best wines in this appellation Bordeaux Pomerol.

Terroir of the Bordeaux Pomerol appellation

This red wine appellation is located on the right bank of the Dordogne. Unlike other Bordeaux wines that use a classification system such as the historical classification of 1855, there are no criteria for classifying the castles and wineries of Pomerol. However, this region is the cradle of the three wines sold at high prices from Bordeaux: Petrus, Lafleur and Le Pin. The total area of vineyards in this appellation is about 790 ha. Pomerol terroir influences the characteristics and styles of wines in this appellation. It is characterized by clay-sandy soils, gravelly with blue clays. The proximity of bodies of water such as the Gironde and the Bay of Biscay gives a temperate oceanic climate that is favorable to the maturation of wines. However, the rains of vendages can cause the gray rot of the grapes which leads to the depreciation in quality and quantity of the harvests. Merlot is the emblematic grape variety of the region. It occupies 80% of the vineyard area. Cabernet Franc is the second grape variety planted that occupies 15% of the vineyards. The remaining 5% is planted with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. About 66% of the wines produced by Pomerol are made up of a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Our list of the best wine producers in the Bordeaux Pomerol appellation

-Pétrus: at the top of the most famous wines in the world, we find the wines of Pétrus, renowned for their rarity and high price. The 11.4 ha vineyard of this prestigious castle extends over half of the "Boutonnière", an iron-rich region composed of sand and blue clay. This gives the Petrus its particularity, its richness, its elegance and its concentration. The wines of this estate are indeed very complex aromatically with notes of fresh flowers, ripe fruit, herbs and earth. The palate benefits from silky, fleshy textures with a smooth finish. Its best vintages reveal the full potential of their true essence after 2 to 3 decades. Take a look at the site to choose the full-bodied, velvety and opulent wine that will adorn your table during the holidays !
-La violette: this tiny vineyard of less than 2 ha is also a real jewel. It produces exceptional wines with a fragrant bouquet with aromas of fruit, undergrowth, lavender, spices, flowers, chocolate... depending on the vintage. The palate reveals a creamy texture, rich with a fine acidity. This wine of undeniable beauty is characterized by the haunting smell of violets. A must taste !
-Le Pin: this castle is located near the village of Le Catusseau in Libourne. It has belonged to the Thienpot family since 1979. Merlot is the grape variety planted in the majority of areas of 2.7 ha vineyard fields of this estate. Its terroir is composed of deep gravel, clay, sand and iron oxide deposits. This producer is one of the first producers to carry out alcoholic fermentation in barrels on the bank of the Dordogne. His wines adopt an exotic style. In the best vintages, they display a concentrated, fresh, long character with notes of wild fruit, citrus, undergrowth, opulent fragrances and a silky mouth that lead to a decadent and textured finish. The production of the castle is limited to 600 to 700 cases per year. This is reflected in its price. Its wines can be better with 7 or 10 years in the bottle but it is not advisable to keep them for more than 2 decades.
-Lafleur: this castle is a tiny property of 4.5 ha managed by Sylvie and Jacques Guinadeau. The estate located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau adjoins that of LaFleur Petrus. He is also one of the elites of Pomerol producers. Its terroir is composed of deep soils enriched by deposits of iron and potassium. Yields are low, but the best vintages of this producer have a aging capacity of more than 5 decades. Like the other wines in this appellation, Lafleur wines also have a unique expression. The best vintages are at the same time structured, powerful, opulent, elegant with an exotic character and mineral, woody, fruity notes. These ideal wines of excellence for investment can display all their depth and complexity in 1 to 5 decades.
-Trotanoy: Jean-Pierre Mouiex has been the owner of this castle since 1953. Its 8 ha of vineyards are located on a plateau, about 1 km from the Domaine de Pétrus. Gravel and deposits of black clay and iron lie in the vineyard fields. The harvest of this castle is done well before the other estates, because it has a microclimate a little warmer than the other castles. The wines of this estate have distinctive aromas of flowers, spices, incense or truffles and ripe plums depending on the vintage. At the tasting, they reveal a velvety, opulent texture, both full-bodied and long and a long and complex finish. Another breathtaking wine that also deserves a discovery.
-Eglise Clinet: another essential castle in the production of Pomerol. 5.5 ha are planted with vines in this wine estate owned by Denis Durantou. Its terroir is composed of gravelly and clayey soils with natural slopes. This makes it possible to produce wines unfolding complex aromas of truffles, flowers, grass, fruits with a sensual, full-bodied, opulent and silky mouth. The best vintages can be bus jeunes.
-La Fleur Pétrus: the vineyards of 18.7 ha of this castle produce very aromatic wines with a nose of truffles, fruits, licorice, cocoa, a lush velvety texture and tannins of crushed velvet.
-Vieux château Certan: this vineyard of 14 ha in one piece produces wines that are also regularly classified by the world press. They are elegant, full-bodied, rich wines with complex aromas of flowers, fruit, chocolate, spices, wet earth, truffles and a texture of pure silk. This type of wine has a beautiful aging capacity. This allows it to develop more complexity and opulence.
-La Conseillante: the 13 ha of vines of this estate produce sweet, fresh, fruity, refined, sexy wines with velvety, elegant tannins and a long finish. They offer a sublime experience for the palate and nose .
-Hosanna: the 4.45 ha vineyard of this castle is located at the top of the famous Pomerol plateau. The wines of this estate are full of notes of dark and juicy fruit and nuances of truffles, chocolate, smoke, earth. In the mouth, they are deep, rich, concentrated with a focused, fresh and persistent finish .
-Providence: the wines produced on the vineyards of 2.9 ha of this estate are recognizable by their scents of earth, flowers, forest soil, black fruits and their fresh, round, ripe and supple mouth with opulent, structured and tannin-rich textures. The whole thing ends with a long and fruity finish.
-Château de l'Evangile: this prestigious estate produces subtle and elegant wines on its 14.1 ha. The limited production of 5,000 cases adopts a rich, elegant, opulent style that can be breathtaking in the best vintages.
-Nénin: this castle belongs to Jean-Hubert and Michel Delon, owners of Château Léoville-Las-cases. The 32 ha vineyard produces deeply coloured wines, with touches of flowers, fruit, cedars, herbs, wet earth, licorice and a tasty, powerful or sweet mouth with a spicy finish. These are wines intended for ageing well .
-Gazin: the 26 ha vineyard of this castle adjoins those of the Gospel and Pétrus. We owe him wines with layers of concentrated fruit, both ripe, silky and sweet and notes of truffles. On the palate, they offer a depth of flavors and can improve with a few years of keeping.
-Bon Pasteur: the 7 ha vineyard of this property produces well-balanced, supple, lush and fruity wines with sensual and seductive textures and a long finish.
-Château Clinet: finally, the vineyard of 11.5 ha of this estate produces sensual wines, powerful in the best vintages with flavors of chocolate, flowers and spices. These wines have a good aging capacity and develop more complex aromatic textures and sensual flavors over time.
