Terroir of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation

The wine-growing commune of Gevrey is a fairly large city with more than 3,000 souls. It is located 15 km from Dijon, in the Côte d'Or region. The wines produced in this appellation include 9 Grands Crus and 26 appellations classified "Premier Cru" and village. The vineyards extend over 405 ha. The majority of premiers crus are planted on sloping soils composed of Jura marls mixed with red alluvium. The 9 Grands Crus are grown on shallow soils made up of Bajocian hard limestone. The quality of the wines decreases as you approach the alluvial plain to the east, on the side of the RN74.

Our selection of gevrey Chambertin's best producers:

-Armand Rousseau: this estate of more than 15 ha was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by its namesake Armand Rousseau. The vineyards are divided into 8.5 ha of Grands Crus and 3.8 ha of Premiers Crus. The limestone and clay-limestone terrain is favorable to the growth of the vines. The estate also adopts the policy of low yield, a meticulous control in the winemaking. This makes it possible to produce concentrated, powerful, elegant, racy and fatty wines with good ageing potential.
-Dugat-Py: Loïc Dugat is the 13th generation of winegrowers in this estate consisting of 5 ha of vineyards including Premiers Crus and Grands Crus sites. Most of the vines in this organic estate are very old, about 65 years old. The key to the success of the production of extremely elegant and well-balanced wines of this estate lies in a vinification with very low intervention and the age of the vines. The wines are bottled without fining or filtering. An area to follow closely, as it has grown over the past 10 years.
-Domaine Trapet: the manager of this winery is now in the 7th generation of the Trapet family. The 18 ha estate has Premiers Crus and Grands Crus sites in Chapelle-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin and the mighty Chambertin. The wines of this estate are the perfect embodiment of elegance and purity. They are wonderfully scented with notes of ripe fruit, blackcurrant, spices, cedars and forest floor. The mouth has a medium body, with a fairly firm structure and wall tannins. The Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 is the most sought after of the wines of this producer.
-Faiveley: this 115 ha estate based in Nuits St-Georges is one of the largest estates in Burgundy. The history of this estate with the most famous appellations of crus dates back nearly two centuries. This producer produces 54 different wines, the best known of which are Burgundy Grand Cru and Premier Cru. This vintage made from the 100% Pinot Noir grape variety stands out for its earthy notes, complex nose, firm tannins and opulent mouth of fruity aromas, spices, oak and vanilla. A must taste !
-Prieuré Roch: this winery was created in 1988 by Henri-Fréderic Roch, a member of the Leroy family. It currently owns 14 ha of vineyards spread mainly on plots in Côte-des-Nuits. These properties include vineyards of Grands and Premiers Crus renowned as the Clos de Vougeot, Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze. Organic farming practices and low-yield production are part of the main lines of this producer.
