The planting of vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape dates back to Roman times. In those days, this place was called Châteauneuf. The pope's suffix was added after the pope's trip to Avignon following his conflict with the king of France in 1309. 8 Popes then stayed in this commune and planted vines there. The region was not officially called "Châteauneuf-du-Pape" until 1893 while the institution of this 1st French wine AOC dates from 1937. History and terroir of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation


This wine region located in the Rhone Valley, in the department of Vaucluse covers about 3200 ha. The city of Orange and its Roman ruins delimit the city to the north. To the south, it is defined by the city of Sorgues, to the east, we find the main road A7 and the Rhône to the west. In 2014, there are 320 domain owners active in this appellation. About 250 of them take care of bottling and selling their own wines. The rest sell their harvest to traders or cooperatives. 93% of vineyards produce red wines. Most of the estates are small with a few exceptions such as Mont Redon which has 100 ha of vineyards. The number of winegrowers who operate vineyards of 30 ha is only 24. The appellation created in 1937 is divided into 5 communes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is the largest region, Orange, Courthezon, Sorgues and Bédarrides. Each of these 5 municipalities is divided into 134 different localities.
The terroirs of the AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape are made up of rolling pebbles, limestone soils, red sandstones, red clays, sand and safre. The variations, the capacity of soil drainage, their mineral composition and the difference between the principles of winemaking produce different accents to the wines. 13 grape varieties can make up this appellation including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Terret Noir among others.

-Emmanuel Reynaud: this owner owns the Château de Tours, located in Sarrians, château Rayas and Château Fonsalette. The Château de Tours estate covers 40 ha. It produces a red vacqueyras, a red Côte-de-Rhône, a white Côte-de-Rhône, a red Vaucluse country wine, a white Vaucluse country wine and a rosé table wine. This producer produces leading wines with a low intensity colour, but with deep, racy fruity flavours, a complex nose and remarkable ageing potential. -Henri Bonneau: Grenache is the main grape variety planted in this 6 ha estate. Small quantities of mourvèdre, counoise and vaccarèse are added to produce medium-bodied wines, with a fruity nose of ripe cherries with aromas of kirsch, pepper, thyme, spices. The palate is dense, enveloping or fresh and sweet depending on the vintage. The Célestins are the best of its wines because they have a concentration of fruit.
-Clos des Papes: a plot of land in this 40 ha estate is located near the Pope's Castle. The vineyard of this estate is divided into 24 distinct plots of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. -Beaucastel : it is one of the oldest estates of the appellation because its origin dates back to the 16th century. The 100 ha vineyard of this producer famous in the production of Châteauneuf-du-Pape uses the 13 authorized grape varieties of the AOC. The red wines of this estate exhale aromas mixing black cherries, strawberries, exotic spices, cloves, olive or licorice with age. The palate is textured, sensual, with velvety tannins very pleasant to the palate. Younger vintages must age for about fifteen years to allow all the secondary nuances to manifest themselves. It also produces white wines that impress with their aromas of white peach, wet earth, pepper, flowers, spices and crushed stones.
-Michel and Stéphane Ogier: the Michel and Stéphane Ogier Côte Rotie estate covers 11 ha. Although he does not have a long history in this appellation, his talents as a winemaker are recognized. Indeed, it produces dense, full-bodied and fleshy red wines that impress with their earthy nose filled with fruit, licorice, smoke, spices ...
