Terroir of the Chambolle-Musigny appellation

This village is an old annex of the Abbey of Cîteaux located on the upper part of the slope of the Côte d'Or at an altitude of 300 m. The best vineyards in Chambolle Musigny are located on the mid-hillside. The AOC produces two superb Grands Crus: Bonnes-Mares and Musigny and a prestigious Premier Cru: les Amoureuses among its wines. Pinot Noir is almost the only grape variety planted in this wine region. It enjoys a continental climate. The harsh winter and the hot summer promote the balance of sugars and the good acidity of the wines. In total, the appellation Chambolle Musigny covers 176 ha of vineyards including 56 Premiers crus and 24 ha Grands Crus.
The vines grow on calcareous and clay-limestone soils. Their exposure to the east at an altitude varying between 250 and 300 m as well as the gravel of the valley guarantee good drainage. In addition, the roots of vines can feed deeply thanks to cracks in limestone dating from the Middle Jurassic. The Chambolle-Musigny produced is a wine with a ruby hue with brilliant reflections. It is remarkable for its delicately scented bouquet of violets and small red fruits. It develops more complex aromas of spicy ripe fruit, prune, truffle, earthy or animal notes after a few years in the bottle. These wines have textures that are both delicate and fleshy and a character combining vigor and femininity.
